A summary of Java job roles

January 17th, 2012

It’s difficult to summarise all the responsibilities of Java jobs for developers. You’ll either be working in-house or at an IT service provider. The seniority of the position will dictate daily tasks. At a junior level you’re likely to be working on specific tasks, debugging code or performing administrative tasks. More senior roles may have people management as part of their remit, and have a greater level of strategic decision making.

The general responsibilities of a Java developer fall into coding, testing, analysis, re-coding, quality assurance, deployment or implementation and documentation. A computer science degree is not essential but can be very valuable for career development. As this is a technical skill, a lot of weight is given to experience and if you’re just starting out getting experience should be a priority.

The ability to work with people, but have focus and determination when dealing with a difficult technical problem, is a vital combination of skills.
