When installing regular cultured stone on a pre-existing wall, the use of galvanized nails and diamond mesh lath is recommended in order to create a more secure anchor for the cultured stone and mortar.
The process of galvanization puts a protective coating of zinc on an iron nail or diamond mesh lath, thus providing added protection from corrosion. Hence, the use of non-galvanized materials is not recommended because once corrosion and rust destroy the iron nails and mesh, the mortar will crumble and the cultured stone will fall off.
