Extensive DIY Website

If I am looking to put together my own website, how technical can I get without having any real training in computers? I know that there is a lot of information out there about a diy website but I have seen what some websites look like that were not put together professionally and I would really like to stay clear of copying that type of product. Are the instructions for putting together your own website easy enough to follow and easy enough to improve on the image and organization of the website or are they just to get a basic site started?
