Bad Parenting: Giving Praise to Mediocrity
December 1st, 2011
While it is important to build a child’s self-esteem and continue to encourage them in every possible way, parents should be mindful of giving appropriate praises. A child should be given credit not necessarily when he/she has excelled on something, but rather when he/she has displayed hard work. Some schools nowadays even give their students trophies simply for participating events. This is a horrible way of teaching kids about reward because it does not give a clear picture of real life. A trophy is a sign of being exceptional and should only be given to those who have excelled through skill and hard work.
